03 Zirma - City & Signs 2
A contemporary reimagining of Zirma, as inspired by Italo Calvino's 'Invisible Cities,' offering a fresh perspective on the enchanting fictional urban realm.
The essence of Zirma is defined by the repeated interplay of its residents’ distinctive character traits and its advanced infrastructure, including skyscrapers, dirigibles, and underground trains. These elements coalesce to create the fabric of typical urban life in a modern city: highly stressed working adults experiencing mental breakdowns in high-rise office buildings; people from diverse racial backgrounds openly engaging in public discourse; and ambitious younger generations striving to assert control over the untamed. The underground trains are often uncomfortably crowded, evoking a sense of suffocation, while dirigibles gracefully ferry elites through the skyscrapers.
The starkly contrasting image of Zirma raises connotations of a dystopian society. One might wonder whether the dirigibles serve as surveillance cameras, monitoring people’s interactions. Behind the façades of the high-rise buildings, workers’ mental well-being is a growing concern. In this unpredictable environment, one cannot foresee when challenges may arise, and even the most vulnerable individuals cannot ensure their safety.
